Mural Art Presentation (EPC)

DSC_0601

Choose three murals found in Penang or any other locations of your choice and describe the following:

  1. Background information about the mural.
  2. Highlight concepts of Effective Public Communication found on your selected mural or metal art.

In this assignment, I have learned many valuable things. Firstly, I learned about the murals in Penang and their impact on society. Many people can be seen taking pictures with the murals. The murals in Penang has brought more tourists to the area and made it a lively place. Besides that, time was limited in Penang since there were other assignments to be done. But still we managed to complete this assignment successfully by managing our time properly. During the presentation in class, I have learned we should use less words and more visuals for our slides. This is to ensure they pay attention to what we’re saying rather than reading the slide. I also learned we should be enthusiastic and spontaneous while presenting.

Food, Culture & Architecture Photo Blog (EPC)

1

Assignment type:  Photo Blog

Topic                  :  Food, Culture & Architecture

Places of interest   : Choose any locations of your choice. The locations can be from any popular spots in Malaysia or abroad.

For this assignment, we as a group of seven have to make a photo blog on food, culture and architecture. As such, we chose to do it on KLCC. In the process of taking photos at the location, we had to be very observant of what we could write on and put on the blog. This assignment definitely made me become more observant of the interaction of others. Besides that, we also had to divide the task among the members so the work is easier to complete. Teamwork is an essential element in the completion of this assignment and it couldn’t be done without everyone cooperating. Also, this assignment helped me hone by photography skills as well. Lastly, I learned a lot of new things about the culture of Malaysia that I wasn’t aware before.

Comparative Research (English 2 & EPC)

1 2

This assignment is a collaboration of two subjects.

English 2 requires a report and presentation & EPC requires a presentation.

English 2 assignment

  1. Form a group with maximum 5/6 members (one member will be the group leader).
  2. Select 2 businesses within the same industry for research purposes.
  3. You will conduct preliminary research (via books, internet, newspaper, etc.) and gather background information on your chosen businesses before the interview.
  4. Prepare your interview questions carefully and please see your instructor to ensure that you are on the right track.
  5. Each group will submit a 2500-3000-word report (excluding cover page and references) based on their chosen research area.
  6. Show your findings in a verbal presentation of 10-minute length.

Effective Public Communication assignment

Choose any TWO businesses your choice and describe the following:

  1. Background information about the businesses.
  2. Analysis in terms of competitors, obstacles or challenges, nature of business and strategies used.
  3. Recommendation – future plans, expansion and ways to sustain the business.

We decided to do a comparative research on two businesses from the bicycle industry. The first is Cyclon Cycle Ind Sdn Bhd and the other is KSH Bicycle (TTDI) SDN. BHD. To be able to write a research report with complete information we had to carefully plan the questions we want to ask in the interview. Asking the wrong questions or ‘weak’ questions can make the process of writing the report harder. The thing I have learned from conducting the interview is to ask the questions clearly and make sure the interviewee understands what the question means. The reason is we have some questions that aren’t answered properly and it hindered us in the preparation of the report. Besides that, I also learned that we should make sure the interviewee is relaxed and comfortable because they can’t answer properly when they are nervous. I think one useful way is to avoid having our body facing them and rather position our body that it faces the same direction as the interviewee. It creates a feeling that we’re on the same team as them rather than enemies.

During the preparation of the report, I have learned how to research a particular subject and compile them together. I also learned how to compare the information we have gathered by using a table since the difference can be seen easily. From the table, we can make a conclusion on which business is more commercially successful. The recommendations are then given based on their weakness that can be seen from the information we collected.

As for the presentation, I learned we need to ensure our slides are interesting and easy to read as our comparison table was using a small sized font. The heading should be there for each slides as well to allow the audience to know we are still on the same topic. The slides should have minimal amount of words and more visuals. This ensures the audience pays attention to what we’re presenting rather than reading from the slide. Being spontaneous and confident while presenting is important as well.

To conclude, I have learned a lot on interviewing to collect information, analysing the information to reach a conclusion and presenting the information to an audience.

In-class exercise (English 2)

This in-class exercise was about interviewing people and seeing how they would react to the questions verbally and non-verbally. The purpose of this exercise is a practice before we start our research assignment. From the videos, it can be said that we got what we wanted to know as we phrased the questions correctly. While it was only a few interviewees, we can conclude that people see male-male holding hands as gay and female-female holding hands as bestfriends. It was an interesting exercise as I learned that the way we phrase our questions in an interview is important to ensure we get the information we are looking for.

Compare/Contrast Essay (English 2)

In this project you are required to compare any two types of English language movies:

a)    Films based on true stories OR b)Superhero films

  • To do a 6 paragraph 600-1000 word comparison/contrast essay of the chosen movie genre based on any two movies from the chosen movie genre.

For this assignment, I have chosen to compare superhero films which are Batman Begins and Ironman 1. The superhero film genre are typically stories about people with superhuman capabilities that fight to protect the public from villains. Justice is usually the main theme of the movie with a mix of romance. I found the two films I have chosen to be very similar as the characters are very much alike. So before I started, I had to re-watch these two films to refresh my memory. Then I go online and read the synopsis to deepen my knowledge on the movies. Only then I start to write my prewriting as a guide when I write the actual essay. Personally, I think I have improved my ability in comparing two similar films and presenting my comparison in the form of an essay. Writing this essay requires careful thought of the content of both films and how they can be related together.

Survey and Infographic (Mathematics)

DSC_0521

In a group of maximum six (6) members, you are required to complete the following tasks.

  • Conduct and propose a comparative analysis of any topics between adolescent aged 18 to 20 and young adult aged 21 to 23.
  • Brainstorm and decide what you want to learn/compare from the survey. Decide who should be surveyed.
  • Brainstorm questions (minimum 20 questions) and list the possible answers (avoid open ended questions). Decide the answer to be numerical rating, numerical ranking, yes-no or etc. (Keep in mind what you want to learn)
  • Print the interviewers’ question and answer list. Proceed to interview your targets. Each group must
survey/interview min 100 targets (50 for each target group).
  • Administer the survey.
  • Tabulate and analyze the data.
  • One A2 sized printed infographic poster which summarises the findings of your survey

For the comparative survey, we decided to analyse how adolescents and young adults interact with their smartphones. Since this is a statistical analysis, we focused on questions which involved numbers and definite answers. To ensure we get accurate results, we made sure the distribution of the demographic is equal:

  • 50% adolescents aged 18 to 20 (50% male & 50% female)
  • 50% young adults aged 21 to 23 (50% male & 50% female)

After we have got the results, we analyse the data and relate the results together. The infographic is then made from the conclusion we have analysed from the data. The infographic is made with the focus on visual communication so there is less graphs and more graphics to illustrate the statistical data.

From this assignment, I have learned how to conduct a survey. It requires careful thought of the data we want to collect and analyse then setting the questions to ensure we get accurate data. The questions must be phrased in a way that it doesn’t confuse the person doing the survey as well. Besides that, I learned how to analyse the data and relate them together to make a conclusion. I have also learned to use statistical formulas and apply them in this analysis. Lastly, as this is a group project, it couldn’t have been done without the cooperation of every team member. Everyone played their role and we managed to complete this assignment successfully.

Surface Area and Volume Exercise (Mathematics)

Untitled

Figure 1 shows an object formed by two cylinders and a pyramidal frustum void at the center of the cylinders. Working in a group, complete all tasks as stated below.

1. Draw all surface area of the object to scale on A3 sized card board (thickness should be about manila card). You are required to show all dimension clearly. (Scan and save the drawings in PDF or image format).
2. Calculate total surface area and volume of the object. Calculation should be done on foolscap paper (not A3 papers on which you draw the surface area) and must be clear and tidy. (Scan and save the calculation in PDF or image format).
3. Construct the above object from the surface area you draw in part 1. (The workmanship of the model is important!!!)

Calculations:

For this exercise, we had to calculate the surface area and volume for the model using the formulas we learnt from class. We also had to to count the circumference of the circles so that we could make an accurate model.

From this assignment, I have gained a better understanding on the topic of surface area and volume. I also learnt that we should work together as a team to solve problems to complete the assignment perfectly. Besides that, I learned how to use my critical thinking skills to complete a task in the most efficient way as possible because the model can be done in various ways and it is the matter of choosing the most suitable method.

Psychology Video (Assignment 3)

Video Clip (10 %), Report (15%), Presentation(5%)

  • The third project consisted of 2 components which include making up a video clip by incorporating the concepts learned in class,
  • written report of the clip and presenting the clip to the class. This project allows students to recognize and identify the connections among concepts and perspectives within psychology and with other disciplines.

The video is a group project of 4. This assignment requires good teamwork between its members to complete. One of the things I have improved from doing this assignment is working as a team. We had to brainstorm ideas for the video and work together during the video shooting. Some of the ideas that we had discussed were have a hidden camera record students’ reactions to scenes we create on campus, interview students regarding scenes that we act out, or create a short movie based on our own storyline. We chose creating a storyline then film it by ourselves as it is more fail-proof than the other option. To come up with the script we had to choose which concepts we wanted to have in the story and think of how we can fit it in.

Psychology Comic (Assignment 2)

  • Group assignment of 4
  • A comic strip with a storyline and storyboard incorporating 5 concepts from 5 different chapters.
  • The focus will be a single comic piece with social psychological concepts
  • You are to present the comic and ins story and after which explaining the concepts that were used

This assignment taught me how to use the concepts in psychology to produce a story. To be able to incorporate psychology concepts in the comic, we had to understand the concepts in depth before writing the story. The assignment helped me further improve my understanding of the concepts as we as a group had to discuss how to use the concept and what does the concept means.

Psychology Journal (Assignment 1)

The first project requires student to write a journal by incorporating the concepts learned in class.

The journal is designed to assess students’ ability in applying theories and concepts to their personal lives and that of others.

From this assignment, I have learned how to use the knowledge from lectures and apply it in my daily life. I can use the concepts learned to improve my communication with other people. Also, this assignment has made me become more observant of other people’s behaviors and understand the reason the act the way they are.
